DANCER • CHOREOGRAPHER • ARTIST
My Mission
As a Chinese Canadian dancer and performer, I strive to present platforms where alternative forms of human expression and communication can occur. I seek to curate a space where creativity, risks, and innovation are welcomed. By choreographing works of my own, and presenting those of other artists, I aim to utilize dance and bodily movement as an expression to depict thoughts and ideas that may not otherwise be possible through speech.
I regularly engage in the creation and reconstruction of choreography and various repertoire. I recognize the importance of dance, movement, and creativity. This has purposed me to exercise my passion for performance and creation, in hopes to ignite a similar engagement among the greater arts community.
As an aspiring choreographer, I am fascinated with the aspect of challenging choreographic and creative norms. One of the ways I have fostered this idea is by contributing a movement vocabulary of my own: a distinct style that merges personal choices and influences from other artists. As an artist, I strive to promote the necessity for innovation and change, avoiding complacency. The moment a specific method or approach becomes ‘comfortable’ is when growth and evolution can be stifled. I attempt to create and surround myself in an environment that welcomes and promotes curiosity, while seeking areas of the uninitiated.
As a performer, I choose to be involved in environments that uphold similar values. While my role as a performer is to best serve the work and choreographer, I enjoy moments of exercising individual choices within the confines of the repertoire. Finding the balance between executing the components of the work, while simultaneously finding artistic liberation within it is key. I aim to be involved in creative processes that align with my creative interests. I believe the success of an experience is based on how one was challenged. My goal is to step away having gained a different outlook and perspective.
My hope is to help bridge the gap across all art and performance mediums, and promote working environments that diminish the presence of hierarchies. I strongly regard all forms of creation and artistic outlets as equal. Whether it is music, visual arts, architecture, stage design, wardrobe artists, cinematography, or dramatic dialogues, the diverse and eclectic community of artists from varying disciplines are equally valued and essential. The more versatile the contributions are, the more depth and texture the work will exhibit. Striving to adhere to these values, my joy is found when audiences are persuaded to ask questions, and to step away from the experience with alternative views and heightened curiosity.
